Junior Firefighter Program: Information for Prospective Juniors

We are so glad that you are interested in becoming a junior firefighter! Participating in your local fire department is an enriching experience that will provide you with valuable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, responsibility, and commitment. Participating in the program will allow the Junior Firefighter to learn about your local fire, rescue, and emergency medical services response organizations in a safe, controlled, educational, and fun way.

Membership is open to boys and girls who are between the ages of 12 and 16.  Any person desiring membership must complete an application. An application can be requested by contacting the Recruitment & Retention Coordinator. To be considered for Junior Firefighter membership, the application must be completed with a parent or guardian signature and returned to the Recruitment & Retention Coordinator for consideration. The Membership Committee will contact the prospective candidate to schedule an interview which requires a parent/guardian to be present.  All Junior Firefighters must then serve a 6-month probation period before becoming an active member and must maintain a “C” average or better throughout their membership. A Senior Advisor reviews all members’ grade reports each marking period for compliance.

Currently, the Department’s Junior Firefighter program meets on the third Monday of every month.  The meetings begin at 7:00 PM (1900 hours) and last until 9:00 PM (2100 hours).  A typical meeting involves a short business meeting followed by a classroom or practical training session.

In addition to training, the Junior Firefighters assist the Fire Company with fundraising events, help the Town and community when requested, and have social outings.  Annually, the Department’s Junior membership participates in “Junior Day,” when all the volunteer Junior firefighter Companies come together at the Emergency Services Training Center for a full day of fun, teamwork, and camaraderie to compete for “bragging rights” for the following year.

If you think you have what it takes and would like to earn service hours in the process, the Department is excited to have you join us!
